In today’s connected event world, we hear a lot about phygital, hybrid and virtual events. These terms, not so new to some, are being used more and more, especially since the health crisis. But what differentiates them? How can we understand and juggle phygital, hybrid and virtual events? The answer in this article.
Let’s start with the phygital events. The term phygital is a marketing term that appeared in 2013 and was initially applied in commerce. It results from a contraction of the words “physical” and “digital”. In the field of events, it designates half-physical, half-digital events. This strongly reminds us of hybrid events.
The hybrid event is a mix of a physical event in person and a digital event that participants can follow online. Indeed, during such an event, the different stakeholders (speakers, participants, partners…) can participate in the event in different ways: either on-site in person or remotely through digital tools.
The virtual event
There is no difficulty in defining virtual events. They result from a transposition of a physical event to a virtual one. The organizers of such an event call upon streaming professionals to convey it to the largest number of people. As much as virtual events were known to the general public, we have witnessed their growth during the quarantine.
The difference between hybrid/phygital events and virtual events is clear, but the difference between hybrid and phygital events is a little more nuanced.
The difference between phygital events and hybrid events
The two names seem to mean the same thing, but what is the difference? The term phygital, because of its terminological history and its current use, gives a greater dimension to the physical encounter, considering that in a phygital event digital keys are applied to the physical event. The hybrid event has emerged as a result of quarantine to replace purely virtual events. The hybrid event is thus rather similar to a virtual event to which one applies physics. The results of these two kinds of events are the same, gathered around an event half physical and half virtual.
